Principal's Message

Marcia Harvey

Hello everyone and welcome back to the new school year. A special welcome also to all our new students who have commenced their studies with us this year.

We finished 2017 on a very positive note with 100% of students expecting to achieve their NTCET receiving a successful result.  This is a wonderful achievement for our school and in particular the students and their teachers. Special mention needs to go to Miriam Ellen-Barwell, Maverick Torr and Samantha Rowley who were our top three ATAR students. Special congratulations also to Travis Kennell, Cyril Bukulatjpi and Henry Daiyi who where our top three Aboriginal achievers. An overall summary of our 2017 results can be found further on in this edition of the newsletter.

The annual NT Board of Studies Awards were held at Parliament House on Friday 9th February. Two NTSDE students received awards. Maverick Torr from Yulara was awarded the Chief Ministers Most Outstanding Distance Education Student Award and Travis Kennell was awarded the Telstra Top Remote Aboriginal Student Award. In addition one of our graduating NTCET students, Antoninusa (May) Kantilla from Xavier Catholic College was awarded the Karmi Sceney Aboriginal Remote Excellence and Leadership Award. Congratulations to all three students on their wonderful achievements.

Classes are now well underway and all enrolled students should now have access to their course materials, know when their lessons are on and ensure they are prepared for each one. Students who experience any technical issues accessing either their course materials in Moodle or their IDL lessons need to contact their NTSDE teacher who will ensure the issue is resolved. Dependent students’ parents should also feel free to contact us with any concerns they may have about their child’s study program. Dual school NTSDE coordinators first point of contact is of course our Student Services Team - Bev Wilson or Leanne Goldsworthy.

Our first Residential Program for our full time dependent students gets underway in week 5. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to come to Darwin to meet their teachers and peers as they commence their academic year. I look forward to welcoming both returning and new students on site at NTSDE on Monday 26th February.

Congratulations! Outstanding 2017 Stage 2 / Year 12 Results

Congratulations to all of our 2017 Stage 2 students who again, with the guidance of their teachers, have again achieved outstanding results across all subjects.

Highlights of these achievements were:

  1. 100% of our potential completers gained their NT Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET). This is the third year in a row that this occurred and above the Northern Territory School’s average.

  2. 100% of our remote Indigenous partner school students gained their NTCET.

  3. 100% our students across all of our Stage 2 subjects gained results at the 'C' grade or better which means that these were able to contribute to their NTCET completion.

  4. That students gained 'A' grade level achievements in 11 of our Stage 2 subjects which were taught by 8 NTSDE teachers.

  5. That two of our students earned the highest marks in the Northern Territory in both Geography and Economics.

NTSDE School Council Needs You!

The NTSDE School Council is looking for new parents to join the group for 2018. This is an important role where parents can support he school and provide input into overall school improvement processes.

Council meets only 8 times a year on a monthly basis onsite at NTSDE and via teleconference which makes it easy for parents who reside outside of Darwin to be part of this group. Meetings generally go for no longer than one hour. Our first meeting and AGM takes place on Thursday 1st March at 5.00pm.

If you are interested in being part of our School Council for 2018 please contact Ms Marcia Harvey directly via either telephone on 8922 2222 or via email on marcia.harvey@ntschools.net

SRC Meeting

NTSDE SRC had their first meeting of the year on Monday 5th February via IDL.
The members on the SRC are Olivia Tester, Sandra Jestin, and Hunter Torr & Rhylie Maurirere.

Our first meeting revolved around the Student Residential in Week 5 and activities associated with it. Many positive ideas were developed for the planning of the Residential. There will be an AGM for the SRC during the Residential Week to elect members for 2018.
